Perils of University Life

I knew that actually looking forward to a new school (university) year – especially when it’s the senior year – was not a good idea. Still, since I couldn’t quite put my finger on the problem, I let it slide.

Of course, once I put my foot inside the uni building, it all came rushing back to me. Unless you’re using the elevators (which are bound to close when you least want them to), there is no way one can hurry in there. Reason: those floors are so *censored* slippery, that I keep skating inbetween classrooms. This, coupled with the fact that I cannot in fact skate, makes my journey through campus an extremely dangerous one. Of course, now that I think about it more… the whole student body is generally moving around at a snail’s pace: must be those impossibly high heels that don’t agree with slippery floors.

As if this weren’t enough, my first laboratory (at 10:00 a.m.) was “Computer Networks” – a subject that, I had been told, is dreadfully difficult. Well, the lecturer kept up to the rumours and cheerfully entered (only to become rather disheartened upon seeing only three students):

Lecturer: So, you DO remember sockets, from OS2, right?
Me: er… um… yeah, sure.

Vera (i.e. me) is starting to panic slightly, seeing that she’d done her best to avoid that part, since it was taught during the last week of courses.

Lecturer: Right… now then, you remember from CA what the big endian and little endian represenations are.
Me: Yes, of course.

Lecturer is looking at Vera expectantly. Vera is considering strangling him, but opts to try to answer.

Me: Um… it’s something about the order the bytes are being read… er processed…

Vera is aware that it’s not that… but for the life of her, she can’t remember why exactly.

After such a ‘relaxing’ lab… is it any wonder I considered simply keeling over and dieing? On the brightside though, I DO have the documentation for sockets, somewhere… on myHDD… I KNOW I do… *pathetic sigh*

See? Life as a uni students presents lots of perils: both physical and mental. Think twice before opting for it.

  • Oh college… Today I have to give a 2 minute presentation on my “ideal job”. What that has to do with Computer Organization & Architecture? I have no clue.

  • Maybe you’re supposed to get as technical as possible? :P

  • Well… he said jobs like working in a nursing home and bbeing a professor count, so I don’t think so. I think he just doesn’t want to teach.

  • *laughs* Sure sounds like it. Still this looks like something I did in 5th grade (weird teachers): must be the senior year sindrome with let’s get rid of them asap!

  • It happens all the time. Me too.

Go for a vacation break and arriving in school once again is like stepping into a different world altogether. Plus, all the weeks of relaxation makes us forget stuff faster than we can ever imagine. :/

  • Okay. What in the heck is up with the floors? Are they always like that? Ah. I hate being put on the spot like that. Yikes. I don’t know what I would have done. I hope things get better for you.
