Slight Obsession
… in the form of Japanese cuisine. That book cost me a small ‘fortune’, at the time, yet I’m still not sorry.

My most recent ‘master piece’ was the onigiri below:

Now the only thing left, is that shop assistants somehow realize that they DO actually sell that stuff. Maybe I should just smash their head into a box full of nori next time :rolleye:
Me: Hi, I’ve been told I can find here toasted seaweed… also called nori?
Shop assistant: Um really? I doubt it… I mean… seaweed. What does it look like?
Me: I’m not sure. I haven’t seen the package.
Shop assistant: Well how could I possibly know then?
Me: um… sorry…?
Shop assistant: I don’t even work in this section!Vera backs away meekly, only to bump into a shelf full of … NORI! After briefly considering the merits of gloating, Vera just grabs two packages and high-tails towards the cash register.
Next time I should just ask for TNT. They’ll probably be happier about it. XP

TNT is the name of our postal service
So if you asked that here they’d probably go: There’s a letter box down the road xD
I haven’t got a clue about places in the Netherlands that sell the stuff though, I don’t really have a need for it anyway xD
Vera: but this is a huge supermarket, which DOES sell the stuff. I’m just asking them to know their merchandise, but apparently that’s way too much. :fist:

I go to Asian super markets/grocery stores for that stuff. They’re big and just like our “regular” ones. The only difference is that they carry only (well almost only) products that have been imported from Asia. So I can get rice, nori, furikake, umeboshi, and everything else Japanese that I want to throw into an onigiri… ^^ I’m lucky that we have them here.
Vera: I’m packing right now. Am sick and tired of being stared at whenever I want something that’s not potatoes or meat. :fist:

Mmmm sushi! I loveeee
*drools*
Vera: um… that’s onigiri. But 3 weeks ago I did make sushi as well (and managed to ‘convert’ my cousin in the process. Forgot to take pictures though).

I live in a really Asian-centric part of Melbourne with a million and one Asian grocery stores, so really can’t sympathise, but they look great!
Have you considered rice paper rolls? They’re more Vietnamese than Japanese, but are sooooo yummy!
Vera: I doubt I can find rice paper, and asking that will probably result in more embarrassing shop assistant – Vera interactions. But if I do find rice paper, I’d be glad to try it out

Yum. They looks good.
LMAO at the supermarket employee not knowing what their own shop sells! FAIL.
Vera: according to my dad it’s normal for us. Which is why we’re not trying to change it, apparently :rolleye:

Geesh, I’ve had too many idiot-shop-assistant encounters to remember them.
“I don’t even work in this section”, hah! :rolleye:
Anyway, oh so that’s called toasted seaweed? Ah. I’ve seen them around, my friends/family love ‘em, but I … have yet to venture into the world of Japanese cuisine. Just uh… maybe … I don’t have the guts for it? ^^ (Or even for trying. Heh.)
Vera: I’ll kidnap you and force-feed you onigiri.

In response to the comment you just left at my site…I can’t review you! Your site actually looks nice. Sorry, but you have to be an internet moron for me to poke fun at you.
I’ve never actually prepared Japanese food myself before, but I’ve never had anything from a restaurant that I didn’t like. That onigiri looks so good.
As for that shop assistant, what an idiot. Just because they’re unfamiliar with what you’re talking about doesn’t mean they have to be rude. They could have just said, “I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you’re talking about.” There was no reason for them to get like that. Sheesh.
Vera: ah well… I can always hope. Well… she did sound rather scared, so maybe that’s why.

SUSHI!
I love sushi, especially those with the raw fish such as salmon and tuna. (:
And that sales assistant sounds … rude.
Perhaps after you bumped into the Nori, you could have wagged it at her so that she can be educated on how a Nori looks like! Ignorance is not bliss.
-evil grin-
Vera: I did indeed look around for her, but she wasn’t there anymore. And that’s onigiri not sushi. xP

I like putting smoked salmon in my onigiri.
Pff. Why can’t people read that it’s “onigiri”?
Vera: I’m not entirely sure… but it’s somewhat similar to making sushi. I wanted to try umeboshi too, but I think that’s hoping for way too much.

Hmph what a rude salesgirl. I get people like that every now and then. Some people get off the wrong side of bed every day.
I love sushi! My mom use to take Japanese cooking classes and make all sorts of fancy sushis hehehe.
Vera: I love sushi too… but that’s onigiri :hmm:

Japanese cuisine is love!
I hate salesladies who don’t even care for their customers! Whenever I encounter one, I usually answer back and go Naomi Campbell (I should stop using that phrase!) on her or better yet, talk to the manager, if he/she’s around.
Vera: you know, I really wanted to do that sometimes, but my dad never let me. He said that would be much too rude of me.

Mm….looks good! Onigiri….I’ve heard about that a lot, as well as ramen, etc.
Vera: yep, ramen’s next on my list of things to make/try.

Oh yum, Japanese food. If I give you money for stamps, will you send some to me?
Vera: haha, sure

Oh man, now I’m going to make those today. Not sure what to put inside as a vegetarian, though. Vegetables? Fake meat?
Vera:umeboshi, unfortunately I can’t find that here. But then what do I expect? XP

Vera as a third person
that’s hilarious!
Vera: for all that I harp on others for referring to themselves as that, I like doing the same thing when reproducing dialogs.
