My most recent ‘master piece’ was the onigiri below:
Now the only thing left, is that shop assistants somehow realize that they DO actually sell that stuff. Maybe I should just smash their head into a box full of nori next time 
Me: Hi, I’ve been told I can find here toasted seaweed… also called nori?
Shop assistant: Um really? I doubt it… I mean… seaweed. What does it look like?
Me: I’m not sure. I haven’t seen the package.
Shop assistant: Well how could I possibly know then?
Me: um… sorry…?
Shop assistant: I don’t even work in this section!Vera backs away meekly, only to bump into a shelf full of … NORI! After briefly considering the merits of gloating, Vera just grabs two packages and high-tails towards the cash register.
Next time I should just ask for TNT. They’ll probably be happier about it.

I haven’t got a clue about places in the Netherlands that sell the stuff though, I don’t really have a need for it anyway xD
Vera: but this is a huge supermarket, which DOES sell the stuff. I’m just asking them to know their merchandise, but apparently that’s way too much.
I go to Asian super markets/grocery stores for that stuff. They’re big and just like our “regular” ones. The only difference is that they carry only (well almost only) products that have been imported from Asia. So I can get rice, nori, furikake, umeboshi, and everything else Japanese that I want to throw into an onigiri…
I’m lucky that we have them here.
Vera: I’m packing right now. Am sick and tired of being stared at whenever I want something that’s not potatoes or meat.

Vera: um… that’s onigiri. But 3 weeks ago I did make sushi as well (and managed to ‘convert’ my cousin in the process. Forgot to take pictures though).
I live in a really Asian-centric part of Melbourne with a million and one Asian grocery stores, so really can’t sympathise, but they look great!
Have you considered rice paper rolls? They’re more Vietnamese than Japanese, but are sooooo yummy!
Vera: I doubt I can find rice paper, and asking that will probably result in more embarrassing shop assistant - Vera interactions. But if I do find rice paper, I’d be glad to try it out

Anyway, oh so that’s called toasted seaweed? Ah. I’ve seen them around, my friends/family love ‘em, but I … have yet to venture into the world of Japanese cuisine. Just uh… maybe … I don’t have the guts for it?

I’ve never actually prepared Japanese food myself before, but I’ve never had anything from a restaurant that I didn’t like. That onigiri looks so good.
As for that shop assistant, what an idiot. Just because they’re unfamiliar with what you’re talking about doesn’t mean they have to be rude. They could have just said, “I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you’re talking about.” There was no reason for them to get like that. Sheesh.
Vera: ah well… I can always hope. Well… she did sound rather scared, so maybe that’s why.

Perhaps after you bumped into the Nori, you could have wagged it at her so that she can be educated on how a Nori looks like! Ignorance is not bliss.

Vera: I’m not entirely sure… but it’s somewhat similar to making sushi. I wanted to try umeboshi too, but I think that’s hoping for way too much.

I hate salesladies who don’t even care for their customers! Whenever I encounter one, I usually answer back and go Naomi Campbell (I should stop using that phrase!) on her or better yet, talk to the manager, if he/she’s around.
