Changing Interests
For some reason, there seems to be a pretty serious pregnancy season at my work. It just sort of occurred to me that everyone seems to be pregnant, or was just pregnant recently. Almost makes me wonder if there was some sort of memo I missed.
It is entirely possible that this is what ultimately made me check out the Momversation, but it’s just as possible that I was incredibly bored one day.
One of the things I remember saying about blog types was:
Mommy blogs? Nah! They bore me to death!
Same way that I’d have been bored to death 3 years ago when my mom tried to lecture me about keeping my bills organized. I do intend to (eventually) start on that, but I’d have to unearth a lot of envelopes, and… OK so it wouldn’t hurt to be more organized, I suppose. Of course, I’ll never tell mom that; no need for more excuses to nag1. Besides, I get all defensive over them, even if it’s just on principle.
As I was saying, I gave Momversation a chance and I liked it. So much that I occasionally also check out Cool Mom, who has some really funny video logs. It’s strange really, after all it’s not like I want to have kids anytime soon 2. Nevertheless, I find it oddly relaxing to listen to talks about helping kids fight off bullies, the stigma of being young mothers…
It makes me think of my own mother, who was so adamant to do everything by the book. She even bought the book, and made notes on its content.
Did you ever find yourself getting interested in things that had no apparent tangency with you/your life? Or very little, perhaps? What was it? What attracted you to said topic?
Alternately, if the answer is no: what attracts you to things that you do like?

1 It’s interesting really how it seems to have increased in quantity. Not by much mind, as she was already doing her best before.
2 Eventually sure, but right now I’m having way too much fun doing … erm nothing much. I SWEAR though, it takes up an insane amount of time.

The memo was something along the lines of: ALL WOMEN IN THIS COMPANY MUST HAVE RAMPANT PROCREATIVE SEX. What, didn’t you get the memo Vera?
Anyway, I also love mommy blogs. I subscribe to at least two dozen of them, and I suppose what attracts me most is that I relate to all of them. Because of the large age gap between my brother and I, and the maternal role that I had to (and still have to) assume in his life because of my parents’ frequent absent parenting, I know all about what the bloggers are talking that. Combined with my babysitting, my obsession with all things kid-related makes sense.
Vera: must have been the all caps then, I tend to ignore those
I love your parenting (er… educating your brother) related posts

Profession / study wise I never thought I would find it fascinating to work with patients… but I have to say I kinda like it.
Although I suspect it’s only because the contact isn’t long. I’, still waiting though that I start liking phone calls at work – I doubt it will ever happen. When ever the phone rings I want to hide.
Vera: oh my phone almost always rings at an inopportune moment. XD

Heh, I’m kind of like that too. I’m not planning on having kids anytime soon, and doing any kind of childcare job makes me shy. But I really like reading about people’s kids, for some reason. XD

The Internet has opened up my interest in tons of things, but I haven’t gotten to the point of mommy blogs yet. Not that there’s anything wrong with them!
I’m just not that interested in hearing about other people’s kids when I often feel like one myself.
Vera: *pats* Don’t get discouraged. There’s still time for that

I am obsessed with mommy blogs, and it’s actually kind of embarrassing. I don’t plan on having kids for YEARS! I think it just happens to be that most of my favourite bloggers also happen to be moms.
… I always worry that my boyfriend will find them in my history and be all, “ROSE HAS GONE BABY CRAZY!” and then jump out the nearest window.
So far, so good though. I’ll keep you posted.
Vera: make sure to clear the history after browsing then, wouldn’t want any unfortunate accidents

Perhaps I’m a tiny bit biased (being a mom and all that), but before I had kids I was a bit interested in mommy blogs. Not the ones that are riddled with all sorts of sidebar ads and promos, and are typically hosted on blogspot, but the more “personal” ones… the bloggers who just happen to be moms, too. In particular I remember being fond of Tess of tessenx.com, and Sarah of onestarrynight.com.
Now, I like a lot of mommy bloggers, particularly those who are in my age range with kids in the same age range. It’s nice to be able to compare notes and appreciate what the other is going through!
With that said, I also follow a few male bloggers, both single and married. It’s always exciting to get a peek at the male mind.

My interests are pretty consistent, so there are rarely times where I find myself actually reading things that I have no interest in (or growing to like these things, for the matter).
Although I don’t quite have any interest in mommy blogs (like you in the past), I do love reading blogs that track a child’s development. (; One example I can name is http://clie.pan.sg – which is a blog about the growth (and the life) if a little girl named Clie. I’ve been following it since her birth in 2002 and she has indeed growth into a sweet little girl!

I work with a lot of mothers at the office and come to think of it, it seems like it’s pregnancy season at work as well, I can think of a handful of people off the top of my head that are pregnant at the moment (and it’s a pretty small office).
Because I work with a lot of mothers, there is of course a lot of mommy talk. And even though I don’t have any children and don’t intend to have any soon I somehow always end up participating in the conversation.

Reading mommy blogs actually excites me… and makes me jealous and sad. But working at preschool quickly balances me out again.

I actually have a side blog I am developing as a strictly mommy blogging/ fashion. Blondish.net has kind of turned in a general tech, literature, and graphic resource thing. Even though I am a mother, I was not really interested, but after stumbling upon a few members who asked me to take a look at their mommy blogs, I was hooked. There are a few sappy ones out there, but so far I have been very addicted. It is nice to read that I am not the only one experiencing something with my son.

I’m not a fan of mom-blogs, but I do love looking at pictures of their precious children. And who doesn’t randomly get interested in things? I think that’s how much range of interests grew. Someone brought up a topic I could care less about. I became bored, decided to do some research, and BOOM I got an interest. However most of them never last long enough.
