Hazardous Activities
Everyone has one (or more) guilty pleasure(s). They’re practically the spice of life, after all. And then… there are really cool people who have dangerous pleasures… like: bungee-jumping, ‘nifty’ bike acrobacy, Russian roulette etc etc. As for yours truly, she’s a rather boring person. Or that’s what I thought up until recently, at least.
Normally I’m not one for horror movies, but my best friend’s got this really good way of making me interested.
- She’d (try to) avoid speaking about horror movies.
- If avoidance is not possible, she’d find at least 5 reasons NOT to watch said movie.
- She’d complain about possible lack of sleep… due to said horror movies.
- In the end, we’d end up speaking about horror movies, way more than… other type of movies.
FTR, I think she was genuinely trying to dissuade me, but things like these always have the opposite effect on me. So obviously after all this dissuasion, I got it in my head that I’d really really like to see Orphan. So I begged, and begged, and made lots of not-so-subtle hints… and so my best friend finally caved in.
The movie was quite interesting and not particularly gory. That’s most probably because I made it a point to curb my imagination, whenever things got less … explicit. THAT, however, did nothing to stop our hearts from hammering like mad during the entire duration of the movie. There were kicks, and blood-curdling screams, and scary mobile phone ring tones… and even scarier shrieks.
… all from the couple(s) sitting right behind us in the theater. Whatever happened to candle-lit dinners and romantic strolls on the beach? 1 Next time, I demand that the movie staff warn us about overeager lovey-dovey couples. And no, I’m not trying to insert some euphemism for snogging… unfortunately.
Do you like watching horror movies in cinemas/theaters?

1 Not that I live on the seaside, but the mall’s conveniently build near an artificial lake. OK, so it’s a disgustingly dirty and foul-smelling one, but … you know… it’s the thought that counts.

Gah, that sounds horrible!
You’d think they would at least turn their phones off (not like people seem to be doing that I hear).
As for your question, I’ve never seen horror movies in theaters. I’m really not exactly a fan of the genre (usually gives me the heebeejeebies). I think I’ve only seen one horror movie, and that was the Japanese version of Dark Water. XD
Vera: nope, they’re very resilient… even when there’s a polite voice asking before the movie starts.

I love horror movies! My mother practically raised me that way. However, I’m very easily scared and often freak myself out after watching one. I thought The Orphan was brilliant; very well done. I saw it on opening night and left the theater thinking “Oh, god. Can I see it again?!”
Vera: heh, I was thinking something similar, and tried to watch then other horror movies. I apparently chose so well, I’m now cured of the urge for quite a while

I have absolutely no clue where the huge fascination with horror movies came from recently, but I’m really quite sick of seeing them advertised on tv. In other words, No I hate watching horror movies anywhere. I will not watch them in a house, I will not watch them with a mouse.
I think I sort of hate all of this decade’s movies, really. I like the 90′s movies the most, followed by the 80′s. There’s a huge lack of fantasy. I want something to spark my imagination!
I do like supernatural movies, though. Dealing with demons and ghosts and such. I have an overall fascination with the supernatural, though.
You’ve got a groovy site, by the way. I actually sat and read through most – if not all – of your articles. I never read articles. I have come to think I might have to start, though. I have….the dreaded (useless) splash page! In its defense, I have two sites, and I’d like for my visitors to pick whether they want to see my boredom at work (portfolio) or at play (journal). . . . Also, I can’t seem to develop the will to study (because it seems like a very involved undertaking) the art of making a wordpress theme, and do the necessary coding to make the wordpress show up on the Index page. I don’t want to scrounge around for the necessary money to pay for a customized theme, either.
I love this color scheme! I’m glad you linked to the colourlovers page, too so I could show it some love. Do you have a colourlovers account?
Oh, and I want to comment on a person who reviewed your site, the one that said that crap about the English language. LMFAO! Everything in that review screamed ignorance! I mean, most of the popular languages on earth have been derived from Latin. Without that, there wouldn’t be Spanish or French or English. I’m pretty sure English came after French and Spanish. Maybe….I don’t know. But still…. what person could actually believe they’re superior just by the language they speak?
Vera: totally agree. I generally leave it up to my best friend to choose the movies, since most of the things I see seem so utterly boring. This way if it’s crap, I can always console myself that I didn’t choose it.
Thank you very much for the compliments. Hah, my articles area reaaaaaally outdated. They’ve been written 2-3 years ago, with barely any changes. Been meaning to update them, but somehow I always get distracted by … erm stuff.
Oh Reesha? I wasn’t the only one who she spouted idiosyncrasies about. You should have seen her responses to her own reviews.

I LOVE watching scary movies with guys I like.
Was gonna watch Orphan with my bf but he didn’t have time before he left for UK. If it’s gonna be with girl friends I would go with a large group of girls rather than 1 or 2.
Vera: I can totally understand cuddling and clinging to one’s significant other while watching scary stuff. My only gripe was with the kicking and screaming.

I can’t watch scary/horror/gore movies. However you want to classify them I can’t do it. I suffer from night terrors, and those kind of movies are perfect triggers for that. Just thinking about it can cause a night terror!
It’s been awhile since that’s happened, but I’m not one to tempt the fates. Though one of these days I’m gonna have to get over this.
Vera: I didn’t suffer form nightmares after any horror movies, but I did a huge marathon of Ghost Whisperer a few weeks ago… which resulted in a more agitated night

There is nothing that frightens me more. I hate horror movies, and would NEVER see one while in a cinema. Good god, you’ll be taking me out of there on a stretcher. I don’t know how you could possibly do it Vera!

This is like the 5th or 6th post I’ve read this week about horror movies. Is it because Halloween is coming?
I am not a fan of horror movies and the last time I went to the theatres to watch a horror movie was 2 years ago. I had nightmares for about a month after watching that movie and I swear I’m not paying to scare the shit out of myself again. Please pardon my language.
Vera: I don’t celebrate Halloween. I just found the poster for the movie interesting, and I’ve been seeing it in the theater since mid August, so I started wanting to watch it.

My friends try to persuade me to watch horror movies as well, but I’m completely terrified of them. I saw one in the cinema (Drag me to Hell) and I got so scared that I had to walk out of the screen and then had sleep with the light on that night… :S

Haha, I must concur, I love taking my date to scary movies, since being a girl and all it has it’s advantages. Although I’m not the person who hides and cringes everytime scary music is being played I often scream and jump. But I’m not scared afterwards, most of the times.. Then the movie has to be top notch! I want to see the Orphan too. Recently saw The Unborn and the ending put me off, the rest was pretty decent, but not the best I’ve seen. The kid was more like a Omen-wannabe!

The only time I watch horror movies is when I’m with a man I’m interested in so that he can hold me while I shriek into his shoulder. Yeah, I’m sly like that.
I would definitely not watch a scary movie alone, that’s for sure.
Also, my guilty pleasure is The Vampire Diaries. Just had to throw it out there.

My boyfriend and I went to see Paranormal Activity. It sucked… it was not scary. However… I was about to touch up on this at my mommy blog (I moved focused…and now I am a multi-blog addict *groans*), but the PDA is really bad these days in the theater, along with noise and moving around.

I love horror movies, but never in cinemas. Mainly because I’m an absolute nancy and end up with my knees under my chin and hands over my eyes and to do this in public somewhat emasculates me.

Watching scary films in the cinema is better because you can get up at the end and leave…whereas at home you jump at every movement afterwards! But I would never watch a scary film alone!
